Eye Health in Children

Good eyesight is essential for a child's educational and social development. The eye is still developing up until the age of 7 so if problems are treated early it can make a difference which lasts a lifetime.

  • All children are entitled to a free NHS sight test
  • Children with a family history of eye problems are more at risk of developing squint and lazy eye
  • Regular eye tests are important to check for the early sights of eye disease, which if left untreated, could lead to blindness
  • Many eye conditions do not display any symptoms so it's important for children to have regular eye tests

Signs which may indicate a problem with a child's eyesight;

  • difficulty concentrating
  • behavioural problems
  • headaches
  • sitting too close to the TV
  • rubbing their eyes a lot
Statistic: 89,500 falls requiring hospital treatment occur each year as a result of visual impairment, costing the NHS £269 million.
