Eye Health for Drivers

Although drivers have their vision checked as part of the driving test, this is only a basic distance test, and it is not checked again until the driver is 70.

Normal eyesight changes with time, and there are some eye diseases that gradually affect a person's eye sight. Therefore regular eye tests are important to ensure a driver's vision is the correct standard.

Driving with vision below the required standard is an offence which can carry a fine of up to £1,000, three penalty points and possible disqualification. Regular eye examinations are crucial to ensure all drivers can see clearly and are not putting themselves and others at risk.

Statistic: 89,500 falls requiring hospital treatment occur each year as a result of visual impairment, costing the NHS £269 million.
