Eye Health in Older People

Good eye health is important for older people to help maintain independence, improve quality of life and reduce the likelihood of accidents such as falls.

  • Anyone aged 60 and over is entitled to a free NHS sight test
  • Those who are unable to leave their home unaided due to a physical or mental disability may be entitled to a free NHS domiciliary (home care) eye test
  • Older people are more at risk from glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts
  • Regular eye examinations are important to pick up early signs of eye diseases as well as other health problems, such as high blood pressure
Statistic: There are an estimated 25,000 children with sight problems in the UK.
